Multi-faceted Chicago-based producer NEZ has just shared his debut solo EP, Midnight Music. Widely renowned for heavy-rotation hits like ScHoolboy Q’s “Man of the Year” and A$AP Rocky’s “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2” (working as one half of the production duo Nez & Rio), Midnight Music is a formal introduction to NEZ the artist - the eccentric, endlessly inventive personality whose magic touch has made him such a sought-after collaborator. NEZ’s new music takes listeners deep into the house music that he came up on in the 80’s, bursting with percolating basslines, future-funk vocals, and four-on-the-floor beats, all while continuing to innovate and push the sound in heretofore unheard directions. “Lift Off,” co-produced alongside Chicago house icon Felix da Housecat, busts through genre barriers to mix deep-house low-end and acid-house noise, with a vocal that blends rapping and pop hooks. Meanwhile, “To the Money” (which debuted earlier this month alongside an exceedingly stylish black and white Emil Nava-directed video) reimagines Flo Milli as a dancefloor diva over a beat built for a sample of crowd noise.
Speaking on the EP NEZ shares: “Midnight Music is a complete mood. It’s what I want to hear when I’m outside. It’s feelgood music and explores different sounds within the scope of dance music. It’s sexy, it’s dark, it’s melodic and upbeat all at the same time.”
